Uganda Opposition Deputy Muwanga Kivumbi Missing After Alleged Detention and Torture
National Unity Platform (NUP) Vice President for Buganda, MP Muwanga Kivumbi, has been missing for more than ten days. NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine, claimed Kivumbi was abducted in broad daylight, taken to Kasenyi Special Forces Command barracks, and tortured "to near death," adding that he is being kept hidden while receiving medical treatment. The opposition demanded that authorities disclose his whereabouts and produce him before a court.
Ten days after the alleged re‑arrest, security agencies still have not confirmed Kivumbi’s location. Video footage shows uniformed and plain‑clothed officers stopping his vehicle near Mpigi Police Station and removing him in a Toyota Hiace van. Police spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke declined to comment on the detention. Kivumbi’s lawyers have filed a habeas corpus application before Uganda’s International Crimes Division, naming the Inspector General of Police and the Chief of Defence Forces as respondents and seeking his immediate production alive or dead.
