Uganda opposition deputy Muwanga Kivumbi reported missing after alleged abduction

Deputy President for the Buganda region of Uganda's opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi, has been missing since July 10, a day after his release on bail following six months of detention on terrorism‑related charges the party denies. His lawyer says his vehicle was stopped in the Mbeere area, he was forced out, and taken away in a civilian truck by armed men, some wearing official uniforms.

NUP alleges Kivumbi was abducted, driven to an unknown location and has not been seen for 13 days, urging authorities to clarify his whereabouts. Party leader Bobi Wine later said he had information that Kivumbi had been tortured “almost to death” and remains incommunicado. Police and the army deny holding him; his lawyers have filed a lawsuit demanding his appearance before a court. The case has heightened concerns about enforced disappearances and intimidation of opposition figures in Uganda.
