Uganda promotes coffee traceability and rice production initiatives
Uganda is implementing strategies to enhance its agricultural value chains, focusing on both the coffee and rice sectors. Ambassador Juju Nsababera, Uganda’s Consul General in Guangzhou, has called for improved traceability and recognition of farmers within the coffee industry. Following a visit to Mountain Harvest, Nsababera emphasized that international buyers are increasingly seeking the origin stories of products, including the specific farmers and processes involved in production.
In the rice sector, Uganda aims to reduce its reliance on imports through a national business-to-business (B2B) dialogue and technology fair scheduled for October 2026. Organized by the Rice Compact of Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) in collaboration with AfricaRice and the National Crops Resources Research Institute (NaCRRI), the initiative seeks to connect farmers, millers, and seed companies. The program intends to address the fact that Uganda currently imports approximately one-third of its rice consumption while domestic milling capacity remains underutilized due to a lack of contractual relationships between producers and processors.
