Uganda coffee sector development initiatives

Overview

Uganda is pursuing various strategies to enhance its coffee sector and drive regional economic transformation. In the Busoga region, officials have advocated for a shift toward value addition in coffee and cocoa, emphasizing that these crops should be treated as complete value chains involving processing, packaging, and branding rather than just raw commodity exports. At the inaugural Busoga Coffee and Cocoa Tourism Festival, Alhaji Faruk Kirunda, the Special Presidential Assistant for Press and Mobilisation, urged stakeholders to expand local manufacturing and agro-tourism to ensure farmers capture a larger share of product value.

Complementary efforts are underway to boost production and quality. In the Mityana district, the government has launched the distribution of 50,000 coffee seedlings to farmers under the Parish Development Model. Meanwhile, in the Bunyoro sub-region, industry leaders are calling for the adoption of modern agricultural practices, such as improved soil management, irrigation, and fertilizer application, to meet international market standards.

To meet global demand, Uganda is also focusing on traceability. Ambassador Juju Nsababera, Uganda’s Consul General in Guangzhou, noted that international buyers increasingly seek the “origin stories” of products, including specific details regarding the farmers and production processes involved.

Expanding this focus to the international stage, Ugandan leadership is actively seeking foreign investment in agro-processing. During the first Uganda–Italy Business and Investment Forum in Rome, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja urged Italian investors to establish local coffee processing facilities. President Yoweri Museveni has also engaged the European Union, advocating for partnerships that facilitate local processing to bridge the price gap between unprocessed beans and processed coffee.
