Uganda road projects plagued by corruption and shoddy workmanship

In Mbale District, a six‑kilometre road project that was supposed to link communities in Bungokho North Constituency has become the centre of a corruption probe. An inspection led by Minister for Local Government Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi found the UGX 300 million‑funded Kyasura–Bukingala road impassable, with vehicles stuck in mud. The probe resulted in the arrest of Mbale District Engineer Eng. Robert Nakimoro, who is accused of negligence and possible misappropriation of public funds.

Separately, Buyende District Chairperson Sharif Mangaraine warned contractors about substandard road works after a review of the Nakabira–Ndalike–Bugaya Road. He highlighted piles of marram, lack of grading, compaction and bush clearing, and criticised the practice of commissioning incomplete projects before the fiscal year ends. Mangaraine urged better supervision and the return of unspent funds to the National Treasury.
