Uganda targets higher tax revenue amid calls for anti-graft reforms

Uganda is intensifying efforts to boost domestic revenue and strengthen institutional accountability. Finance Minister Henry Musasizi has challenged 174 newly recruited Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) staff to prioritize integrity and professionalism. The government aims to increase the national tax-to-GDP ratio from approximately 14 percent to at least 20 percent to support national development.

Simultaneously, the Uganda Local Government Workers’ Union has called for systemic reforms to combat corruption. The union urged the government to focus on strengthening preventative systems and providing adequate funding to accountability institutions, such as the Inspectorate of Government and the Auditor General. The union also emphasized the need for due process, requesting that civil servants be protected from public humiliation and unfair victimization during investigations.
