Uganda to Host Kampala Summit on Somalia Peacekeeping Funding Gaps

Uganda will host an extraordinary summit of African Union mission troop‑contributing countries in Kampala from July 29‑31 2026. The three‑day meeting will bring together defence ministers, chiefs of staff and heads of state from Uganda, Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Egypt, Kenya and Somalia, as well as senior United Nations and African Union officials, to address funding shortfalls, logistical challenges and the long‑term stabilisation of Somalia. The United States has announced it will end remaining UNSOS logistical support after 31 December 2026, heightening concerns over the mission’s sustainability.

Ahead of the summit, the Somali Future Council issued an open letter urging the same troop‑contributing countries to condition continued security assistance on the establishment of an inclusive national political agreement. The council highlighted that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s mandate expired on 15 May 2026 and the federal parliament’s term ended on 14 April 2026, leaving Somalia without a clear constitutional transition. It called for a transitional council and a political settlement as prerequisites for further AUSSOM support.

The summit thus aims to reconcile financial and operational challenges with the political conditions deemed essential for the mission’s future.
