Overview

In early July 2026 the United States moved to block United Nations funding for the African Union’s peacekeeping operation in Somalia, raising concerns about the mission’s financial viability. On 28 July President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met U.S. Congressman Darin LaHood in Mogadishu, reaffirming the bilateral security partnership and flagging the U.S. decision to end funding for the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) after the year’s close. The same day Kenya’s foreign affairs minister and Somalia’s foreign minister met in Addis Ababa to ease diplomatic friction over the denial of Somali officials’ entry into Kenya.

From 29‑31 July an extraordinary summit was held in Kampala at the Speke Resort Munyonyo, bringing together defence chiefs and ministers from the seven troop‑contributing countries – Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Burundi, Djibouti, Egypt and Somalia – together with AU and UN officials. The meeting, themed “To Sustain the Stabilisation Process in Somalia,” focused on the looming U.S. cessation of logistical support for the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) after 31 December 2026, which provides transport, fuel, food and medical evacuation for the roughly 12,000‑strong AUSSOM force. Delegates examined African‑led financing alternatives, urged the UN Security Council to create an interim logistics body for 18‑24 months, and warned that without a reversal the mission could collapse similarly to Afghanistan’s 2021 withdrawal. General Muhoozi Kainerugaba called for unity, creativity and resolve, while analysts noted that Somalia’s intertwined political crisis adds further risk to lasting peace.
