Ugandan leaders urge regional economic diversification and infrastructure development

Ugandan officials are calling for regional economic shifts and the adoption of government development programs to combat poverty.

In Bunyoro, Minister of State for Bunyoro Affairs Grace Mary Mugasa urged leaders and farmers to move beyond a reliance on affirmative action and the oil and gas sector. Highlighting that oil and gas are national assets, Mugasa encouraged farmers to adopt a ‘four-acre model’—combining crops like coffee, bananas, and vegetables with livestock and fish—to ensure sustainable household income and food security.

In the Busoga region, First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga advised leaders to support existing university structures rather than waiting for advanced infrastructure. Kadaga also announced the establishment of a second skilling hub in Bugiri district to expand vocational training. Additionally, she highlighted the government’s progress on the Jinja-Kampala Expressway, describing it as a strategic project to reduce traffic congestion and boost regional trade and industrialization.
