Ugandan political tensions rise over Muhoozi Kainerugaba endorsements

Political friction is increasing within Uganda's ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) following endorsements for General Muhoozi Kainerugaba's potential presidential bid. Former government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo has criticized NRM ministers for endorsing Kainerugaba so soon after President Yoweri Museveni's recent election, describing the moves as a “vote of no confidence” in the President. Opondo warned that such premature campaigning could undermine the President's mandate and deter foreign investors.

Simultaneously, Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) deputy leader Andrew Mwenda has alleged plans to challenge the political influence of Internal Affairs Minister Gen Kahinda Otafiire. Mwenda suggested the PLU may promote alternative figures, such as former minister Dr Elioda Tumwesigye, to compete against Otafiire in the Greater Bushenyi region. These developments follow reported tensions between Otafiire and Kainerugaba, which allegedly failed to be resolved during a meeting convened by Gen Salim Saleh at the request of President Museveni.
