Ugandan President Museveni calls on South Africa to halt xenophobic violence against foreigners

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni asked South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to implement decisive measures against xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals, after three Ugandans were killed and more than 1,000 were displaced. Museveni warned that the violence could undermine African unity and security, noting that the term “xeno” used for African migrants originates from the Greek word for “alien” and should not be applied to fellow Africans.

He highlighted that many African countries, including Uganda, supported the African National Congress during the anti‑apartheid struggle, and he accused political opponents of the ANC of fueling the attacks to damage the party’s reputation. Uganda announced a financial assistance package of two billion Ugandan shillings for the repatriated families, providing two million shillings per household to help them rebuild their lives. Diplomatic discussions between the two governments are ongoing to assess the damages and possible compensation.
