Uganda's ex‑Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago remains hospitalized, court delays treason case
Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago is still receiving specialized medical treatment at Mulago National Referral Hospital and has been unable to appear in court. The Uganda Prisons Service informed the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court that his health – including hypertension, respiratory problems, spinal complications and a history of neck surgery in India – makes him too frail to be produced. Consequently, the court adjourned his misprision of treason case, first to 7 July 2026 and later to 9 July 2026, to allow further medical investigations.
Lukwago, arrested on 15 June 2026, is accused of failing to report an alleged plot by his clients Kizza Besigye and Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya to overthrow the government. He denies the charge. Earlier, the chief magistrate denied bail but ordered that his wife and a chosen lawyer be granted reasonable access and receive medical reports. He was transferred from Luzira Prison to Mulago Hospital on 25 June 2026 for comprehensive assessment.
The case continues while Lukwago remains under hospital care.
