Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni announced support for a proposed East African oil refinery after meeting Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote. The two discussed a $15‑$17 billion project capable of processing about 650,000 barrels of crude per day and intended to serve Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and other regional markets.

Museveni said Uganda will back the regional venture while continuing its own Hoima refinery project, emphasizing that value‑addition and reduced reliance on imported petroleum are key to African industrial integration. Dangote indicated that locations under review include Kenya’s ports of Mombasa and Lamu and Tanzania’s Tanga, and highlighted potential job creation across the region. The proposal reflects broader efforts to develop integrated energy infrastructure and promote shared prosperity in East Africa.
