Ugento hit-and-run: Prosecutors seek jail for suspect
Prosecutors in Lecce have requested prison time for 22-year-old Roberto Colitti, who is accused of road homicide following the death of cyclist and engineer Daniele Congedi on August 9 near Ugento. Colitti faces charges of aggravated road homicide due to his alleged flight from the scene.
During a preliminary interrogation, Colitti expressed remorse and claimed he did not realize he had struck a cyclist. However, investigators argue that his actions—including using a tow truck to remove his vehicle from the site before fleeing—indicate full awareness of the accident.
New forensic investigations are underway to reconstruct the moments surrounding the crash. Authorities are examining the mobile phone of Colitti's father to analyze communications and GPS data. Additionally, forensic geneticists are testing a strand of the suspect's hair to determine if cannabinoids were present at the time of the incident, following previous blood tests that indicated substance use.
