Fatal hit-and-run investigation in Ugento

Overview

Following the August 9 death of cyclist Daniele Congedi near Ugento, Italian prosecutors in Lecce sought prison time for 22-year-old Roberto Colitti. Colitti was accused of aggravated road homicide after allegedly fleeing the scene of the accident. Investigators noted that Colitti used a tow truck to remove his vehicle from the site before leaving, and forensic tests were conducted to check for cannabinoid use.

By early September, a judge granted the request for pretrial detention, placing Colitti in prison. The court cited a “propensity for predatory conduct” and a disregard for driving consequences. While the suspect claimed he believed he had struck an animal, judicial findings indicated he continued driving until his vehicle broke down. An autopsy suggested the cyclist might have survived had immediate medical assistance been provided.
