UGM discussion disrupted as students break up government officials' forum

On 15 June 2026 a public forum at Universitas Gadjah Mada’s Gelanggang Inovasi dan Kreativitas (GIK) in Yogyakarta was abruptly dissolved by attending students. The event featured three senior government officials – Budiman Sudjatmiko, head of the Poverty Acceleration Agency; Nusron Wahid, Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Head of the National Land Agency; and Sudaryono, Deputy Minister of Agriculture. During the disruption a staff member was injured by a hard object thrown from the crowd.

Student representatives condemned the incident, stating it “hampers the right of citizens to discuss, exchange ideas and express views peacefully.” Political analyst Ayip Tayana echoed the criticism, saying, “Kampus seharusnya menjadi ruang dialog, di mana gagasan diuji,” and called for more such dialogues between officials and students while urging authorities to investigate the violence.

The episode has sparked debate over academic freedom and the role of university campuses as spaces for democratic discourse in Indonesia.
