Four Migrants Drown in Ceuta Waters Amid Rising Border Crisis
Four people were found dead in the waters off Ceuta after attempting to swim from Morocco, bringing the death toll on this migration route to 27 for 2026. The bodies were recovered by the Guardia Civil over a 24‑hour period, with the first found on Saturday afternoon and the last at midday on Sunday.
The deaths have intensified pressure on Ceuta’s Centro de Estancia Temporal de Inmigrantes (CETI), which is operating at its 512‑person capacity and cannot admit additional arrivals. Approximately 150 migrants are currently encamped near the centre awaiting space.
Following a Spanish Supreme Court ruling on 8 July that the current immigration law does not permit the rejection of migrants who arrive by sea, the Ceuta government has called for legislative changes to allow the return of such migrants. The delegate of the Asociación Unificada de Guardias Civiles (AUGC) in Ceuta, Rachid Sbihi, warned earlier in July that the court decision could trigger higher migrant pressure and more deaths at sea.
