UIDAI clarifies Aadhaar update fees and online processes
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has outlined official fee structures and procedures for updating Aadhaar card details to prevent overcharging at service centers. New Aadhaar enrollments are entirely free of charge, as are mandatory biometric updates for children aged 5 to 7 and 15 to 17.
For existing cardholders, demographic updates—including changes to name, address, date of birth, gender, or mobile number—cost ₹75. Biometric updates involving fingerprints and iris scans cost ₹125. If a user updates both biometric and demographic information simultaneously, the fee is capped at ₹125.
Citizens are encouraged to use the myAadhaar portal to update Proof of Identity (PoI) and Proof of Address (PoA) documents online for free. This is particularly recommended for those whose Aadhaar cards were issued more than 10 years ago without subsequent updates. While online document re-verification is free via the portal, performing these updates offline at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or CSC center incurs the standard service fees.
