Uijeongbu citizens launch campaign to extend Subway Line 8

The Uijeongbu Citizens' Committee for the Extension of Subway Line 8 has officially launched to demand the inclusion of the Line 8 extension in the government’s 5th Metropolitan Area Wide-area Transport Implementation Plan. The committee, led by Chairperson Ko Jae-eun and composed of representatives from civic, professional, and business groups, argues that the extension is not a special favor but a necessary fulfillment of state responsibility to compensate for the regulations imposed on northern metropolitan areas.

To increase pressure on the central government before the plan is finalized in November, the committee has initiated a signature campaign with a goal of 100,000 participants. Planned actions include a mass rally at Uijeongbu Haengbok-ro on the 8th and a demonstration of approximately 300 people in front of the Blue House on the 15th.

The committee’s four primary demands are: the inclusion of the extension in the 5th transport plan, the practical allocation of transport infrastructure to compensate for northern metropolitan regulations, the fulfillment of administrative responsibilities by Gyeonggi Province and Uijeongbu City, and bipartisan cooperation from local politicians.
