Uiseong County seeks to host new correctional facility

Uiseong County in Gyeongsangbuk-do has officially applied to host a new correctional facility as part of a Ministry of Justice initiative to establish four such facilities nationwide. The county is conducting a series of briefing sessions for local residents, provincial and county council members, and social organizations to build community consensus and explain the project's benefits.

The proposed facilities are expected to house approximately 1,000 inmates each and employ over 250 permanent staff members. The Ministry of Justice aims to select candidate sites by the end of this year, with a target completion date of 2034.

Uiseong County anticipates significant economic benefits, estimated at approximately 800 billion won. The county expects the project to drive regional growth by attracting new residents, creating jobs, and stimulating local businesses such as restaurants and lodging through increased visitor traffic. County Mayor Choi Yu-cheol stated that the goal is to secure a new growth engine to overcome the crisis of regional extinction and ensure sustainable development through population inflow and job creation.
