UK airports begin phased rollout of contactless facial recognition

The United Kingdom has commenced a phased rollout of contactless facial recognition technology at airport e-gates to streamline border control. The system allows eligible passengers to complete identity checks via a camera that captures a live image, which is then compared against verified passport and immigration data, removing the need to physically scan a passport at the gate.

As of late October 2026, East Midlands and Birmingham airports have already introduced the technology, with some gates already operational. The program is expected to expand across a network of 13 major airports by early 2027. The identified locations include Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London City, London Luton, Newcastle, London Stansted, and East Midlands.

Initially, the technology is aimed at eligible British citizens, though wider international access is planned for the future. While the system aims to increase processing speeds by up to 25%, travelers are still required to carry a valid passport for immigration purposes.
