UK airport contactless facial recognition rollout
Overview
The UK Home Office has initiated a phased rollout of a ‘contactless borders’ project, implementing new generation facial recognition technology at airport eGates. The system allows passengers to complete identity verification through facial scanning, comparing live images against passport and immigration data without the need to physically scan a passport at the gate.
Following initial testing at Manchester Airport, the technology has been deployed at East Midlands and Birmingham airports. The project aims to increase processing speeds at eGates by up to 25%. The rollout is scheduled to expand across 13 major airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London City, London Luton, Newcastle, and London Stansted, with a goal of full installation by early 2027.
While the system is currently aimed at eligible British citizens, wider international access is planned for the future. Officials note that despite the contactless nature of the gates, passengers must still carry valid passports for airline check-in and boarding procedures.
