UK airports to roll out facial recognition for contactless borders

The United Kingdom is set to roll out ‘contactless borders’ technology at airports, allowing British travelers to use facial recognition at e-gates instead of scanning physical passports upon arrival. The system will initially launch at Birmingham and East Midlands airports in the coming weeks, with a full rollout to all e-gate equipped airports—including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, and Edinburgh—expected by early next year.

Under the new protocol, airlines will provide Border Force with a gallery of passport photographs for all British passengers arriving that day. E-gate cameras will then match travelers' faces against this database. Border Force Director General Phil Douglas stated the system would provide a more secure and faster transit, noting that the pre-loaded gallery makes the verification process significantly more efficient.

The upgrade is projected to reduce border control processing times by approximately 25 per cent. While the technology is initially limited to British passport holders, developers aim to extend it to other nationalities authorized to use e-gates, such as citizens from the EU, US, Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, and Singapore. Passengers whose faces cannot be matched will be prompted to scan their passports traditionally or directed to a manual Border Force desk.
