UK airport contactless border technology rollout

Overview

The United Kingdom is implementing ‘contactless borders’ technology at airports, utilizing facial recognition at e-gates to allow travelers to clear border control without scanning physical passports. The system works by matching a traveler’s face against a gallery of passport photographs provided to the Border Force by airlines.

Phased implementation began at East Midlands and Birmingham airports, with a specific rollout at East Midlands Airport noted on October 6, 2026. The initiative aims to upgrade all e-gate equipped airports—including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, and Edinburgh—by early 2027. Testing indicates the method can be up to 25 per cent faster than current procedures.

While initially limited to British citizens, the Home Office intends to extend the service to citizens from other nations authorized to use e-gates, such as the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, and various EU countries. Under the new system, passengers approach the gate and have their photograph taken to be compared against verified immigration, travel, and passport data. Although the physical passport is no longer required for the gate scan, travelers must still carry their documents for check-in, boarding, and in instances where the system requires manual verification by Border Force officers.

As of late October 2026, the phased deployment has expanded across 13 international airports using Amadeus ‘Seamless Gates’ technology. The system currently supports British and Irish citizens with biometric passports, alongside nationals from the EU and partner nations including the US, Canada, Australia, and Japan. The UK government is also examining ways to expand automated eGate use to a wider range of arrivals, including more holders of indefinite leave to remain.
