UK allocates £5.4bn for Typhoon upgrades and £360m for RAF jet training
The British government announced a £5.4 billion investment to modernise its Eurofighter Typhoon fleet through 2040. The upgrade will fit 107 aircraft with new AESA radars, helmet‑mounted displays, improved software and communications, supporting bases at RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Coningsby and complementing the F‑35 and future Global Combat Air Programme. Critics note the Ministry of Defence has not disclosed detailed cost breakdowns.
In parallel, the Ministry of Defence confirmed a £360 million commitment to fully recapitalise the RAF’s Jet Training System, including provision of new aircraft for the Red Arrows display team. Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry Luke Pollard said, “The Defence Investment Plan commits £360 million to the full recapitalisation of the Jet Training System, including the provision of new aircraft for the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows.” The number of jets and delivery timetable remain to be defined, aiming to replace the ageing Hawk T1 and modernise training for both UK and international fast‑jet pilots.
