Cambodia hosts global summit to combat online scam networks

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet hosted an international conference in Phnom Penh to address the multi-billion-dollar online scam industry. During the summit, Hun Manet asserted that Cambodia will never be a ‘safe haven’ for cyberscams and claimed the government has ‘completely dismantled all large-scale scam compounds’ in the kingdom.

To demonstrate these efforts, authorities showed reporters shuttered compounds containing seized materials such as counterfeit cash and fake police badges. The conference included representatives from over a dozen countries, including the United States and China, as well as officials from Interpol and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

Despite these claims, analysts and international observers expressed skepticism. Critics argue that while large-scale compounds have been closed, criminal syndicates may have simply dispersed into smaller, more decentralized units. Furthermore, some experts and U.S. lawmakers have called for deeper investigations into whether politically connected elites continue to protect or profit from these transnational criminal networks.
