UK and France cooperation intercepts 4,300 migrants in English Channel
A bilateral agreement between the United Kingdom and France has led to the interception of more than 4,300 migrants attempting to cross the English Channel in small boats. According to the UK Home Office, French security forces, supported by British funding, prevented 185 separate crossings during the first three months of this cooperation, which took place between April 27 and August 2.
Targeted enforcement measures, including the apprehension of human traffickers and the seizure of maritime equipment, resulted in a 61 percent prevention rate for small boat incidents during this period. This represents a nearly 5 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Additionally, the total number of arrivals has decreased by 43 percent year-over-year.
UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated that the cooperation has helped dismantle criminal networks and act as a deterrent. While overall crossings have seen a decrease, reports from the coast indicate that migrants are increasingly using more dangerous routes. Meanwhile, authorities have also warned of misinformation, noting that a viral video claiming to show a migrant making specific demands for housing and money was an AI-generated montage using footage from 2024.
