UK and Spain join international efforts to ban trade with Israeli settlements

The United Kingdom, Spain, France, and Canada have implemented or supported trade restrictions targeting goods and services originating from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. The UK's measures, announced by Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, aim to distinguish between trade with Israel and commercial activities supporting settlements deemed illegal under international law. These restrictions are expected to take effect within nine months and will primarily impact agricultural products.

Spain has already adopted restrictions preventing settlement products from entering its market and has limited consular assistance in those areas. In response to the UK's actions, Israeli authorities closed the British Consulate in East Jerusalem and barred 12 British officials from entering the country.

A coalition of Arab and Islamic nations, led by Saudi Arabia and including Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, Qatar, and Egypt, has formally welcomed these economic measures. The coalition cited United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334 and an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice, which mandate that states should not recognize or assist in maintaining the situation created by Israel's occupation.
