UK and US health officials warn of deadly synthetic opioid contamination in street drugs

Public health directors in North and West Northamptonshire warned that street and online drugs sold at festivals and other gatherings may be contaminated with powerful synthetic opioids such as nitazenes, which can be up to ten times stronger than heroin and have caused recent overdoses and deaths in the UK. They highlighted the presence of counterfeit opioids, synthetic cannabinoids marketed as THC, and contaminated ketamine, urging users to avoid illicit drugs, use harm‑reduction measures, and carry naloxone.

U.S. officials, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, issued a similar alert noting that illicit fentanyl is increasingly mixed with emerging synthetic substances—nitazenes, xylazine, cychlorphine and medetomidine—many of which are veterinary sedatives or unapproved for human use. These additives can dramatically increase overdose risk and may not be fully reversed by standard naloxone doses. Authorities urged the public to avoid non‑prescribed pills, carry naloxone, and seek emergency help if an overdose is suspected.
