UK authorities investigate squishy toys after child injury

British consumer protection authorities are investigating popular ‘squishy’ fidget toys after a child was hospitalized due to an injury caused by a needle included in a toy set. The toys, which are frequently promoted on social media platforms like TikTok, are designed to be squeezed for stress relief or entertainment. Some models include a syringe and needle intended for injecting air into the toy to simulate activities like ‘pimple popping.’

British Consumer Protection Minister Kate Dearden stated that there is no justification for such products to be sold online, noting that the ministry is actively investigating the matter. The Child Accident Prevention Trust has called for online retailers to be held to the same safety standards as traditional brick-and-mortar stores.

Following investigations by The Telegraph, which confirmed that these products are marketed to children and include sharp needles, Amazon has removed the controversial items from its platform. The company stated it has taken action against products sold by third-party vendors and is reviewing similar listings.
