UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres, after a recent visit to the island, said the Cyprus region is rapidly changing and increasingly volatile, making a solution more urgent than ever. He announced that a new informal 5+1 meeting will be convened once sufficient preparation on confidence‑building measures, methodology and the substance of talks is completed. The UN will consult both Cypriot communities and the guarantor powers – Turkey, Greece and the United Kingdom – to create the conditions for a successful meeting.

Turkish‑Cypriot President Tufan Erhürman met with EU special representative Raffaele Fitto, stating that the European Union cannot be a party to the negotiations but can support confidence‑building measures. The United Kingdom government welcomed Guterres’ proposal, saying it will back the new 5+1 format when conditions are met. In the same press briefing Guterres warned that the world can no longer endure more wars and highlighted the accelerating climate crisis and food‑insecurity risks affecting about 45 million people.
