UK bans TPO chemical in gel nail polishes

The United Kingdom has implemented a ban on the chemical trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO), a photoinitiator used in gel nail polishes to harden the product under UV or LED light. This follows a similar ban previously enacted by the European Union due to concerns regarding reproductive toxicity.

As of August 15, UK manufacturers and brands are prohibited from selling new products containing TPO. The classification of the chemical as a reproductive toxicant stems from high-dose laboratory studies involving rodents, though experts note that topical application during a manicure involves significantly lower concentrations than those used in the animal studies.

In the UK, where nail treatments represent a £160 million annual industry, the legislation may impact salon practices. Reports indicate that by early next year, salons using polishes containing the banned substance could face prosecution.
