UK ban on TPO in gel nail polishes

The United Kingdom has moved to ban the chemical trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO) in gel nail polishes. This decision follows the European Union’s classification of TPO as a reproductive toxin, a designation based on laboratory studies suggesting potential links to fertility issues and endocrine disruption.

Initially, the UK planned a phased implementation to allow businesses to exhaust existing supplies, with a prohibition on purchasing products containing TPO set for February 14, 2027. However, subsequent developments indicate that as of August 15, UK manufacturers and brands are already prohibited from selling new products containing the substance.

The regulation impacts a nail treatment industry valued at £160 million annually. While experts note that topical application involves much lower concentrations than the high doses used in animal studies, the ban is expected to force manufacturers to reformulate products. Reports suggest that salons using polishes containing the banned chemical could face prosecution by early next year.
