UK battery energy storage projects receive major investment

Significant investments are being made into battery energy storage systems (BESS) across the United Kingdom to support clean energy transitions.

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has committed over €270 million to the Kilmarnock South project in southern Scotland. This 350 MW / 1,400 MWh lithium-ion battery project, developed by Noriker Power, is designed to store excess wind power and return it to the grid. Once operational, expected in early 2028, it will be the longest-duration asset in CIP’s UK portfolio. CIP’s total Scottish battery portfolio is projected to eventually provide 1.85 GW of capacity.

In a separate development, developer Root-Power has appointed several engineering and construction firms to support three multimillion-pound BESS schemes in Scotland and Surrey. These projects, totaling approximately £50 million, include a 34MW facility at Dounreay, a 12MW facility in Caterham, and a 50MW facility in Glasgow. Contracted firms include Steve Morgan Associates, Hedigan Construction, Engineering Power Solutions, and RJ Power.
