UK Biobank study: Exercise intensity reduces chronic disease risk
A large-scale analysis of UK Biobank data published in the European Heart Journal indicates that exercise intensity is a more critical factor in reducing disease risk than total duration of movement.
The prospective cohort study analyzed nearly 97,000 participants using objective accelerometer data. The findings show that individuals whose vigorous physical activity (VPA) accounted for more than 4% of their total physical activity had a 29% to 61% lower risk of developing several chronic conditions compared to those with no vigorous activity. This benefit remained significant regardless of the total volume of movement.
Specific health benefits identified include a reduced risk of severe cardiovascular events—such as heart attack, stroke, and heart failure—as well as lower risks for atrial fibrillation, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic fatty liver disease.
