UK commercial vehicle sector attracts £1.1bn investment
The United Kingdom’s commercial vehicle sector has attracted £1.1 billion in private investment since 2021, according to analysis by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). This funding supports the development and production of over 30 different models and conversions, including low-emission, electric, and hydrogen-powered vehicles.
The investment spans the manufacturing, research and development, and supply chain operations for vans, trucks, and buses. The sector benefits from international involvement, with businesses from more than 20 countries—including the US, Japan, China, and India—operating within the UK.
SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes noted that the transition to zero-emission road transport is creating new opportunities in engineering and advanced technologies. The UK currently holds significant market positions, serving as Europe’s second-largest market for both vans and heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), and as Europe’s largest market for zero-emission buses.
