UK councils introduce safety measures amid water deaths and wildfire risks

Rotherham Council is facing a motion to strengthen water safety after the drowning deaths of 16‑year‑old Muhammad Secka at Rother Valley Country Park and 11‑year‑old Mackenzie Swift in the River Don. Independent councillor Jodie Ryalls is calling for national backing, public education, the passage of ‘Sam’s Law’ to require rescue equipment at high‑risk open‑water sites, and a dedicated Minister for Water Safety. The motion also requests a review of all council‑managed water sites and a four‑month report to the scrutiny committee.

At the same time, Trafford Council has imposed a temporary ban on barbecues, fires, fireworks and any naked flames at Sale Water Park because of hot, dry weather and ongoing wildfires across Greater Manchester. The ban aims to protect visitors, wildlife and nearby communities; increased patrols and water‑sand equipment will be deployed. A 20‑year‑old woman was arrested on suspicion of arson after video footage showed youths setting off fireworks near the moors.
