Britain's worst cereal harvest in four decades amid historic drought
England and Wales recorded their driest July on record, with southern England experiencing its driest month ever. The month was also the second hottest and the sunniest July in UK history, prompting amber heat‑health alerts and hose‑pipe bans for about 23 million people.
The extreme summer has left wheat, barley and oat yields far below average – wheat at roughly half its normal height and an estimated 6.8 t/ha, well under the ten‑year mean. The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit projects the 2026 cereal and oilseed harvest to be the worst since records began in 1984, with a shortfall of up to 2.5 million t, costing arable farmers up to £390 million.
The National Farmers' Union, led by Tom Bradshaw, warned that the drought could trigger food shortages and urged the new Prime Minister Andy Burnham to grant tax breaks for on‑farm water storage, calling water security a matter of national security.
