By early August, England recorded only about 10 % of its long‑term July rainfall and Wales about 9 %, making July the driest month on record for southern England and the sunniest for the whole UK. Wheat crops are now roughly half their usual height and oat yields are very poor. The NFU warned that food shortages could follow, urging tax breaks and investment in on‑farm water storage. Hose‑pipe bans now affect around 23 million people, and heat‑health alerts remain in force across multiple regions.
