UK employers express uncertainty over new trade union equality rights
A survey by workplace expert Acas reveals that 19% of employers lack confidence in implementing new trade union laws set to take effect on 30 October 2026. The Employment Rights Act 2025 introduces a statutory right for trade union equality representatives to take time off to perform specific equality-related duties.
While 64% of employers and 41% of workers expressed confidence in their organizations' ability to adapt to these changes, nearly one in five bosses and 18% of workers remain uncertain. Acas has updated its Code of Practice to assist with the transition. Baroness Maggie Jones, Chair of Acas, noted that while most are prepared, the new guidance aims to help those impacted to prevent disputes and foster productive workplace relationships.
