UK-Europe high-speed rail services could reach 15-minute frequencies by 2030

High-speed rail services between the United Kingdom and mainland Europe are expected to expand significantly by 2030, potentially increasing frequency to one train every 15 minutes. Currently, Eurostar operates approximately 25 daily round trips, but new competition is projected to push that number to roughly 55 departures per day.

Virgin Trains has received approval from the Office of Rail and Road to access British railway infrastructure, with plans to launch up to 20 daily round trips between London, Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam by 2030. Italy’s state railway, Trenitalia, also intends to begin services through the English Channel as early as 2029, operating up to 10 daily round trips supported by a €2 billion order for 19 new high-speed trains.

Additionally, the British company Gemini Trains has announced ambitions to operate 11 daily services through the tunnel by 2030. While expansion offers increased connectivity, challenges remain regarding international permitting processes and the limited capacity of existing stations and railway infrastructure.
