UK expands Global Talent visa to over 100 companies

The United Kingdom announced on 6 August 2026 that its Global Talent visa scheme will be expanded to allow more than 100 research‑intensive companies to sponsor foreign scientists and engineers. Companies now eligible include pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca, automotive group Jaguar Land Rover, as well as newer innovators such as Added Value Solutions, Denroy Plastics, Riverlane, NuQuantum, Notpla, GSK, Arm, IBM and others. The change removes the previous requirement that applicants be linked to universities or public research bodies, giving them the flexibility to work for commercial R&D firms and to change employers without new sponsorship. The government says the move will accelerate breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, clean energy, life sciences, advanced manufacturing, quantum technologies and creative industries, creating high‑skill jobs and attracting private‑sector R&D investment. The Global Talent visa has already supported more than 12,500 researchers from over 130 countries, and the expansion is presented as a key part of the UK’s industrial strategy to keep the country competitive in the global talent race.
