UK Global Talent visa expansion
Overview
The United Kingdom has expanded its Global Talent visa scheme to allow more than 100 research-intensive companies to sponsor foreign scientists and engineers. This expansion, facilitated by UK Research and Innovation, removes previous requirements that applicants be linked to universities or public research bodies, allowing them to work for commercial R&D firms and change employers without new sponsorship.
Eligible organizations operate within eight high-growth sectors identified in the government’s Modern Industrial Strategy, including life sciences, advanced manufacturing, digital technologies, clean energy, and the creative industries. Participating entities include companies such as AstraZeneca, Jaguar Land Rover, GKN Aerospace, and the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC).
Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade Jonathan Reynolds stated that the initiative aims to make it easier for innovative companies to recruit researchers to develop future technologies and medicines, thereby underpinning the nation's industrial strategy and driving economic growth.
