UK experts share simple tips to keep potatoes fresh for months

Potatoes are among the most wasted foods in British households, often sprouting or turning green within weeks. Food‑industry specialists and chef Sara Moulton recommend storing potatoes in a breathable container such as a paper bag, cardboard box or open basket, placed in a cool, dark, dry spot away from sunlight and heat sources. This reduces moisture build‑up and prolongs shelf‑life by up to three months.

A separate tip, popular on social media, pairs potatoes with an apple. The ethylene gas emitted by apples slows the sprouting process, further extending freshness. Both methods advise avoiding plastic bags, which trap moisture, and suggest regular checks for sprouting or green patches, which can contain harmful toxins.

These low‑cost practices aim to cut household food waste while maintaining the safety and quality of the potatoes people eat.
