UK First Sea Lord warns of Russian maritime threat

Admiral Sir Gwyn Jenkins, the UK First Sea Lord, has identified Russia as the primary maritime threat to United Kingdom national security. During a speech at the Department of Naval Research in London, Jenkins highlighted that this threat is most acute in the High North and the North Atlantic.

To counter Russian aggression, Jenkins emphasized the need to strengthen the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), a ten-nation North European alliance including Norway, Sweden, and Finland. The JEF is working alongside NATO to secure land, air, and sea domains, with recent commitments to increase presence in the Baltic, the North Atlantic, and the High North.

The Admiral noted that the strategic importance of the Greenland-Iceland-UK corridor and the Norwegian coast remains as vital today as it was during the Second World War. He also pointed out a growing vulnerability: while the UK is increasingly dependent on the Atlantic for energy, food, and trade, the public remains largely unaware of maritime importance, even as Russia deploys sophisticated undersea systems.
