UK-Russia maritime security tensions

British naval leadership has issued warnings regarding the growing threat posed by the Russian submarine fleet and its impact on national security.

Initially, General Gavin Jenkins assessed that Russia possesses advanced research programs and the capability to inflict “serious damage” on critical British underwater infrastructure. He criticized the British submarine construction program, citing technical issues and funding reductions that resulted in “extremely low” combat capability.

First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Gwyn Jenkins has since identified Russia as the primary maritime threat to UK national security, noting that the danger is most acute in the High North and the North Atlantic. Jenkins reported that Russian vessels are actively “probing, testing and mapping” the sea floor, specifically targeting undersea infrastructure such as transatlantic cables. He warned that in a future conflict, enemies might attempt to sever these cables, similar to tactics used during previous wars.

To mitigate these risks, the Navy chief has called for an urgent increase in the production of warships and drones to protect the Atlantic. He also emphasized the need to strengthen the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), a ten-nation North European alliance, to work alongside NATO in securing the Baltic and North Atlantic domains. Jenkins noted the strategic importance of the Greenland-Iceland-UK corridor and the Norwegian coast, while highlighting a growing vulnerability: the UK’s increasing dependence on the Atlantic for energy, food, and trade.

While military leaders have advocated for defense spending to reach 3 per cent of GDP by 2030, Prime Minister Andy Burnham has not yet committed to this target, citing concerns regarding the welfare budget.
