UK first‑time homebuyers feel stressed and turn to fixer‑uppers

Research by Skipton Building Society shows that 70% of first‑time buyers in the United Kingdom describe the home‑buying process as frustrating, citing uncertainty over completion dates, possible transaction failures, delays and financial pressure as major sources of stress. Solo buyers, especially women, report heightened emotional and financial strain, with many fearing sudden income changes and the cumulative costs of rent overlap, removals, legal fees and furnishings.

At the same time, some first‑time buyers are seeking cheaper entry points by purchasing fixer‑upper properties. One example highlighted a buyer who renovated a starter home and realised a £55,000 profit, illustrating a growing trend of using renovation to offset high purchase prices without sacrificing location.

Skipton advises prospective buyers to build a financial buffer, research extra costs in advance and maintain regular contact with professionals to mitigate anxiety.
