UK food security faces major threats from supply chain disruptions

Industry leaders and oversight bodies are warning that the United Kingdom’s food security is under significant threat due to a combination of climate shocks, global conflicts, and economic pressures.

Ranjit Boparan, president of 2 Sisters Food Group, stated that the food sector is facing a “perfect storm” caused by extreme weather, ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, and persistent cost pressures. He called for urgent, coordinated action from the government to increase self-sufficiency and urged for faster decision-making regarding farm planning applications and critical infrastructure.

Separately, the National Audit Office (NAO) has warned the government to prepare for potential “catastrophic events” that could disrupt food supplies. The NAO has urged the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to collaborate with businesses and households to develop emergency plans. Tom Bradshaw, president of the National Farmers Union, noted that the availability of food has often been “taken for granted” and called for increased support for agricultural businesses.
