UK Food System Faces Rising Risks, IGD Survey Finds

A new resilience survey by the Institute for Global Development (IGD) reports that 91% of food industry leaders and academics say the risks to the United Kingdom's food system have increased over the past year. Respondents identified geopolitics as the top five‑year risk, followed by climate change, water scarcity, and agricultural challenges, with all participants agreeing that government policy has not strengthened food‑system resilience.

IGD senior resilience manager Kathryn Reynolds warned that climate change is likely to become the greatest long‑term threat because it amplifies other pressures. She called for a diversified, global supply chain and stronger UK‑EU trade links, noting that “building resilience has become a shared priority across all sectors” and that organisations must anticipate change rather than merely react to disruptions.
