UK government adopts measures to combat antisemitism in schools
The United Kingdom government has accepted 27 recommendations from a review led by Sir David Bell aimed at tackling antisemitism in English schools and colleges. The measures include dedicated antisemitism training for staff and leadership, improved incident recording, and initiatives to increase understanding of Jewish identity and contemporary antisemitism.
The review follows reports of high-profile attacks on Jewish communities in Britain. Sir David Bell recommended addressing antisemitism as a distinct issue due to its unique intersection of racial and religious dimensions. The government will also encourage schools to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism.
However, the findings have faced scrutiny regarding data interpretation. While reports cited that three in five Jewish students experienced or witnessed antisemitism, critics point to discrepancies in how personal victimization is calculated versus witnessing incidents. Additionally, the country’s largest teachers’ union has expressed pushback regarding the implementation of these sweeping measures.
